I find children do better in the studio as there are many "new" things to occupy them, thats when I catch them off guard. Mum, Dad, Granny or indeed the whole family are usually there either in the studio or discretely watching from another room.
Treat your "would be models" (boys or girls) to a fashion shoot, they love it. It's a boost to their self confidence. They are able to bring different outfits, re-do make up and hair during the shoot. Make it part of a birthday treat.
If you prefer to have a formal portrait, like a graduation photo or to celebrate a sporting or musical achievement or a coming of age. I take a selection of images for you choose from.
